Destry's WORCS Round 1 Report

Written by The Off Road Corner

WORCS: Rd. 1 Speedworld, Az.

January 31, 2010

Race Day: The race started at 12:00 and we had a ton of
pro’s filling the gate. The first round is usually one of the toughest, because
everyone’s not sure where they’re at after the off-season. I felt pretty good,
but I’d have to say this is the most stacked I’ve ever seen the WORCS series.
When the gate dropped I had a decent jump, and was probably around 8th after
the first few corners. The pace was insane, and I knew if I kept it up I was
going to get really bad arm-pump and wear myself out before the 2-hour race was
over. I had a couple guys go by, but after the first lap I was in 10th. I was
happy where I was at for most of this lap, and then I started to flow a lot
better and picked it up. I was able to break away from the pack I was riding
with, and put myself into 8th after a couple laps. By the fourth lap I was in
6th and one spot away from my goal at the first round. I had some great battles
back and forth with a lot of riders, and it never seemed like I had any
breathing room. I pitted just after the 1-hour mark and the guys did a great
job getting me out. For the last 45-minutes I had a solid 6th going until I saw
Eli Tomac closing in. He was riding really well, and kept pushing me the rest
of the race. At one point he got within a couple seconds, but the good thing
was I saw we were making up time on the guys in front of us. With two laps to
go I started to see Ricky again, and since Eli wasn’t giving me any room to
relax I had to keep pushing. On the last lap I was within 10-seconds of RD, but
I think we were all feeling the beat up course more than ever. After leaving
the mx track I stalled it, and it took me a few kicks to get it going. I still
hammered down and came up 3-seconds short and ended up 6th.

Overall Summary:

My goal coming into this race was a top 5 and I was only one
off from that. I felt like I road my own race and was happy with the way it
went. Besides the one stall, at the end of the race, I really didn’t have any
problems.

Other Notes: This was the first round that WORCS started to
use the live timing (for all classes during the week). It’s awesome and I had a
lot of people tell me they were following the race at home. I also like the
photo on top of the page (Kawasaki sponsored the live timing). Here’s the link
so you can watch it at the next round http://worcslive.tracksideresults.com/bike/

I attached some photos from Mike and Amber Farmer. I also
have a few from my daughter (Kelsey) and some other ones friends sent me. I’ll
post more photos on my message board too, plus the WORCS video from the race.
Thanks!

I’m sure by tomorrow WORCS will have their video clip up
from the race.

I’m always hearing these old guy jokes lately and then I
realized 3 of the top 6 riders were all in their 30’s! By the way, Brown is
older than me so you need to give him a hard time too. j/k. I don’t mind being
listed as an old guy as long as I’m still beating up on these kids. J

It was good to see our local boys do really well this
weekend. Taylor Robert won, and road awesome, and then Cole Martinez won the
Pro 2 class.

It’s really cool to see so many fast MX riders racing the
WORCS. This race was stacked with them, but I have to say Eli impressed me the
most. He’s a young kid and he had great fitness for the whole 2-hours. I have a
lot of respect for guys coming out to this series, because it’s not easy. I
know it will make them a better MX rider too!

On Saturday they are trying something new by having a hot
lap (a lot like MX Outdoors). You have to go out there and push it hard for a
whole lap to get a good time, since it determines your gate pick. I know the
spectators really enjoyed it.
